How it works

time encryption-as-a-service

1

Shackle your files

Choose a file and a future date. Your file will be encrypted and locked into a package.

2

Share your package

Send your package to others by e-mail, publish it on your blog, site, social media, or share however you like, just like any other file.

3

Unshackle your files

After your chosen date, people can unlock your package on this website themselves.

This web app lets you encrypt files, which happens on your computer only. No file contents are ever sent over the internet.

Anyone can use this web app to unlock a package at any time. Decryption is always free, and can even be done offline if needed.

To unlock, we use our Pod technology to check the time. A Pod is a decryption device that only decrypts when the time is right.

FAQ

frequently asked questions

Why would anyone need time encryption?

Read our manifesto about time encryption.

Isn't it easier to just wait to send something?

Circumstances can change. When you use time encryption, you can share files right away. No need to wait, no need to worry.

Isn't this something for government agencies?

Government use is just one of many use cases. We are providing this technology for unrestricted and universal use.

Is my data safe? What guarantees can you give?

Our service is currently in public preview (Beta). There are no guarantees at this time, but we are working hard to get there. Decryption still relies on our service being online, and our best efforts to keep it that way. We also strongly recommend you to keep backups of anything you shackle.

Can anyone see my data or break the encryption?

Your data is secured with multiple rounds of AES and ECDSA cryptography to keep data confidential and tamper-proof, and uses local browser Web Crypto for maximum privacy.

Are any of my files sent over the internet?

Encryption only takes place on your computer. Files are never uploaded to us or anyone else. See our Terms for more details.

What is a Pod and why should I get one?

A Pod is a device that lets you decrypt any timeshackled data at home. We are still developing the first Pod prototypes, expect an announcement later this year.

Who operates Timeshackle?

Timeshackle is a service by Snowcrash B.V., an innovation startup from the Netherlands and part of the Future Infinitive initiative for digital self-sovereignity. For inquiries, feel free to contact us at contact.

Pod

secure time decryption device

Pod drawing

The Pod is a small patent-pending device that makes time encryption possible without having to rely on the internet.

It uses Galileo OSNMA sattelite time with a secure CC EAL 5+ smartcard to authenticate the current time, and to decrypt only when necessary.

Our public decryption service runs on this technology. Don't want to rely on this website? Get your own Pod to unshackle at home, soon.

Roadmap

towards universal use

Our goal is simple. We want to make time encryption practical and easy to use.

This journey wouldn't work without a plan.

Our first milestones:

  • introduce time.shackle to a broad audience.
  • raise awareness for time encryption.
  • reach out to audiences that would benefit most from the use of time encryption.

Our next milestones will focus on certification, stronger guarantees, and making Pod devices available to users. In the future, research will focus on making this technology even more local and decentralized.

Fully decentralized

Next generation Pod with a local time source that does not rely on sattelite reception.

time.shackle

send your files to the future

time.shackle is a time encryption service. It locks your files until a later date in the future, so you can share them right away.

Shackle. Share. Done.
